celebrating babywearing

happy international babywearing week!

our earliest bw picture- age 2 weeks

our most recent bw photo- age 36 months, though we have been at it for 43 months now! gangly 3 year old boys sometimes need to check that attachment with mama, too, if only briefly. (time to take some more pictures!) i wished i had brought along our carrier on our hike on this same beach, just last night. i ended up piggy back riding my son all the way back from the hike (usually he has more gumption, but he preferred a ride).  my arms got pretty tired, and my old trusty mama tool numero uno would have been just the thing.

babywearing has been integral to my journey as a mama. i am saddened by bad press it has been getting lately, because it is so essential to life with a baby/toddler, and has enhanced our lives in such wonderful ways. as both a babywearing mama, and an artisan who sells handmade baby carriers, this is near and dear to my heart- it is a huge part of my life and a part of my livelihood. it is so rewarding (and i never thought i’d be a salesperson but…) to have someone “just try on” a sling and walk away wearing a quieted, comforted, instantly-asleep baby they’ve just purchased because it was the baby gear they didn’t realize they couldn’t live without. in an effort to get the word out that babywearing is not only extremely safe but it is also enormously beneficial to babies AND parents! i believe that having your baby close to your heart is arguably the safest place they can be. babywearing is inherently safe, it enhances safety as well as ensuring a strong attachment bond between parents and babies. stephanie at adventures in babywearing has been hosting a “call to action” this week, where you can link your own bw story, and you can read more about the insanity of CPSC recalls and so on at the baby carrier industry alliance facebook page. i love the bw call to action: “they cannot recall my arms!”

quinn’s eighth month ~ crawling, waving, and first words

9/24-9/30

we had susan, ro and gryph over for bread-baking lessons. Mmm. Gryphon is so sweet with Quinn, gives him hugs and kisses. Gryph also appears to like me- calls me “Mawy” and asked to sit on my lap when Quinn was napping in the other room. Ro just turned one and is starting to walk, and LOVES guitars. He is actually smaller than Quinn but more mobile. They seemed interested in each other.

We did our lab time this week (Quinn is getting to be very knowledgeable in DNA research, i must say). Sometimes Quinn likes to eat a little “lunch” on work days now- a little apple or banana while mom is eating. He has sat in a high chair now at the lunch place and seems very proud to be sitting up so well! (He hardly ever falls backward anymore if he is sitting on the floor playing. Yay!) he is also starting to use his new sippy cup (phew! He likes it. Since he never took to a bottle this could be mom’s key to a yoga class… someday.) he still doesn’t drink much water (doesn’t need to- 15 soaking wet diapers a day is plenty!) but it is a novelty for him (read: good thing to do when bored.) we got him a stainless steel sippy because of all the news lately about toxins in the plastics used to make bottles and sippies.

Last but definitely not least… Quinn’s first official word: Mom-mom! (that’s me!) for at least a month he has been using the consonant “m”  but recently (and it is hard to pinpoint when) it is clear that he is using it associated with me, usually when he needs to nurse or get his diaper changed. It is almost always spoken in a tone of voice suggesting “i need you desperately and immediately!” hehe. I can’t describe how amazing it is to hear him call me mom-mom.

10/1-10/7

we’ve been watching Quinn’s expressions change and mature- for a kid as expressive as he has always been, it’s amazing to see still more new things he can do with his features. He uses so many parts of his face- eyebrows, eyes, mouth, etc. he now uses his tongue more and more. For blowing raspberries, among other things. He licked my face once. (i try to keep him from licking the floor!)

we think he is starting to say da-da now- it is not as clear as his mom-mom (meaning he doesn’t always seem to desperately need dada when he says it) but it seems he is building an association there. His use of consonants goes up all the time- i’ve heard T, V, Z, S, St, and P and i’m sure i’ve left some out. (G, M, B and D have been around for a while now.)

we saw Deirdre and Eavan again, and it was super fun for the kids to see each other again now that they are much more active. We also went to Susan’s house for one afternoon and Quinn seems to really think Gryph and Ro are his new brothers- they all wiggled on the floor together playing with Thomas trains. Quinn’s new food this week was homemade bread! (Whole wheat flour and molasses… he grabbed it before I could disagree!)

10/8-10/14

Quinn caught his first cold (age 7.5 months- not bad!) we had one bad night where I was awake for most of the night because he had trouble laying down and especially nursing (too congested). His little nose let him sleep upright in the sling, luckily, so he was still somewhat rested the next day. Then he and i napped a lot that day and got a GREAT night’s sleep the following night (Quinn 14 hours, me 11 hours, with a few feedings of course.) I managed to avoid the cold for the most part, thanks to vitamins and echinacea, but dada got it pretty badly and took a day off of work to recover. That was nice because by afternoon he felt much better so he hung out with Quinn a bit.

We went to the zoo on thursday with Susan and company. This time Quinn’s favorite was the cheetah because it was asleep right next to the plexiglass and he could see that it was just like Mr. Kitty (the kitty formerly known as baby kitty). He said “T!” to me, which I think is his way of saying “cat” at the moment. That day was Grammy’s birthday, and we managed to get her present to her on the exact date (purple hyacinth bulbs for her garden) which is a first.

Quinn is trying some new foods bit by bit, usually when he grabs them. He had some quinoa that Susan made, and has been really enjoying bread. He has been practicing his singing (higher pitched and usually the lyrics are da-da-da-da… maybe because dada puts music on and dances around the living room with him more often than I do.)

On Saturday Quinn went for a car ride with just Dad, to go pick up some firewood. He demolished a banana in his carseat on the way home. I stayed home and finished sewing his new carrier. It is designed like the Ergo but slightly bigger, with a heftier hip belt… and it didn’t cost $95 because I used old jeans to make it! It seems very comfy for Quinn and it helps put his 24 pounds of weight more on my hips than my shoulders!

Quinn laughs hysterically when he watches dada chopping firewood. We’re not entirely sure why….

10/15-10/21

Quinn is doing amazing things right now. Trying his first spices (curry potatoes from Mommy’s dinner! Yum!); crawling between rooms (still in army crawl style but very efficient); putting cat food in his mouth (I hear they all do this; luckily the cat BOX is inaccessible to him.)

He is saying “words” with two consonants in them now. If i had time to look at a book, I’m sure there is a technical term for that. Bop! Det! Vem! Are some that we have heard. He continues to use his sing-song voice and it is so charming.

On Friday he started waving hello! One day he didn’t know how, the next, every five minutes. He did it all day with me, then showed off for dad when he came home from work. He even has said things very closely resembling “hi!” while he waves. Often he puts up his whole hand, then while it’s up there, he curls all but his index finger. (You’re number one, Quinn!)

10/22-10/23 8 MONTHS!

Not too much partying went on for the eight month birthday, but there was some guitar playing and a lot more waving going on. The birthday itself was a lab day for Quinn and I, and he took his new skills on the road. He tested out waving at people on the bus, which sometimes worked (whoa, it’s not just mom and dad then?) he also waved at Deb (my boss/mentor) and other lab mates throughout the day.

Quinn weighs in the neighborhood of 26 or 27 pounds (we finally got a cheap scale because he doesn’t fit on the veggie scale now; it is not very accurate.) I am now carrying Quinn in his new carrier and while I am sad that the Ellaroo will not really hold him anymore, it sure gave us 8 awesome months of use EVERY DAY for hours on end…

I’m feeling really blessed these days to be Quinn’s mama!

quinn’s seventh month ~ squash meets baby approval

8/24-8/30

Quinn’s food repertoire continues to grow. He is still having one solid food meal a day, in the evening around our dinnertime. He has decided he likes apples after all. Also, he now eats pears, peaches and sweet potatoes.

I did not get much sleep this week; Quinn has had a very restless few nights of wanting to nurse just about all night long. A few nights I was awake at least every hour, if not more. On the 28th , the culprit revealed itself- Quinn’s upper left front incisor made its appearance! He slept much better after that. (I never knew how good that six hour stretch each night was until it was gone again temporarily!)

Other new and exciting teething news- now Quinn bites! Oh, it is exciting, but it is not fun. We’re still working on that one, it seems to be related to him checking out his new equipment and/or soothing the cutting process. It’s hard on mama though. And it’s the first time we’ve encountered a “no” situation which is mentally tough for both of us.

It’s fun to watch Quinn trying to crawl. He immediately flips to his belly if he’s laid down on his back to play, and if he is set down sitting upright, he dives forward to his belly. Then he alternates power kicking his legs and pushing up his torso with his arms. He will do this for very long periods of time- he’s very determined!

8/31-9/6

We spent labor day weekend at home in Portland, and our only excursion was to the Portland zoo. It was Quinn’s and my first visit there. We brought his stroller but for the early part of the day he wanted to be in the sling. He really enjoyed the Northwest exhibit, because the salmon, sturgeons, river otter and ducks were all in exhibits where you could see them both above and below the water (the otter doing somersaults, the ducks’ feet kicking, etc.)

Otherwise it was a normal week of hanging out with mommy- yoga, lab work, the usual. The new food of the week was carrots.

The most exciting thing this week was watching Quinn start to push back while he is on his belly and starting to get his belly off the floor!

9/7-9/13

over the weekend dad was working at a festival, so Quinn and i were on our own for the most part. We did stop by to visit dad, and since the festival was in sellwood, we also saw steve, dena and bodhi.

At home, Quinn witnessed mom in a frenzy of babyfood making activity. We made apples, pears, peaches, summer squash, zucchini and carrots. I had a blast. My cookbook “the petit appetit” told me to steam the fruits and veggies in their skins to keep the most vitamins, then peel, then puree. I filled up the ice cube trays a dozen times and put the little frozen portions into freezer bags. I think the book is on to something- the fruits turned out rosy instead of beige, and it is the best babyfood i have ever tasted.

Lab, yoga, lab…

Quinn can now get up on his hands and knees for longer and longer stretches, and sometimes he rocks forward and back as if he wants to launch himself across the floor (which I believe he does.)

Tooth number 4 appeared on 9/13 (upper right incisor)!

9/14-9/20

Add acorn squash and green beans to the list of Quinn-approved foods.

We went to the OMSI this week with Susan and her two sons Gryphon (3) and Ronan (11 mo). Quinn liked seeing the animals there (snakes, rats, lizards). He also took some good naps in the sling. Mom was happy to have company and to see the sciencey-geeky exhibits that make her feel right at home.

The usual lab routine, walks, etc. The news for this week is that 9/18 marked the arrival of Quinn’s 5th tooth! (Upper left, second incisor). Also, Quinn is “army crawling” now. Look out world!

9/21-9/23 7 MONTHS!

Quinn, his dad and i went for Quinn’s 4th camping trip… this time to the beach! We camped in Cape Lookout state park right on the coast, so we coudl spend the whole long weekend hiking on the beach. We had gorgeous weather and Quinn absolutely loved the beach. He had been to the coast at 6 weeks old, but slept through it, so this was his first time laying eyes on the ocean. Mom was so proud. He positively squealed with delight when we carried him close enough to the waves to see them coming up near our feet and receding again. He adored playing in the sand as well, yes, including eating it. He has a very adventurous palate. (He also sampled the dirt and twigs at our campsite, of course.) He ate his first eggs while camping. He had his first rides in our frame backpack carrier and apparently was quite comfy, given how well he napped in it. Mommy and Quinn even got to take a nap together on the beach. Such good memories and such a great place to wake up on his 7 month birthday!

quinn’s sixth month ~ mouth full of moss and tree full of owls

7/24-7/31

i finally got to talk to mary ellen this week and it was so much fun to hear about life with her twin baby girls- their similarities (catelyn has magic marker on her toenail because they are so identical) and differences (catelyn prefers bottles, ellie prefers breastfeeding.) i can’t wait to see photos of them cuddled up together napping in the pack and play.

it was also a chance for me to reflect on the earlier baby days and see how things have changed. it happens gradually. one day i was excited because quinn was 3 weeks old and i went in the backyard for 10 minutes with him, then at 5 weeks i was psyching myself up to take him more and more places; now he’s 5 months and i take him just about anywhere. this week we went to the lab 2 days instead of just 1. he did great! i was exhausted on tuesday night- it feels like working 2 jobs simultaneously all day, then another shift when i get home. i did much better on thursday- i must be getting used to it.

quinn has a tooth really coming in now- the lower left front tooth. i can see a tiny bit more of it every day, so it seems it might be the winner of the “first tooth” award, even though those canines showed themselves first. while quinn was not as interested in frozen items in his two-month-old teething stage, he is now using his frozen seal flippers directly on his gums- AND he has the hand coordination to pick it up and put it there now!

this weekend we camped overnight in gifford pinchot national forest. it’s our closest free campsite even though it’s in washington- only an hour away. we hadn’t been camping since quinn was 8 weeks old and it snowed on us in the desert, so it was about time! we were a little nervous th
at someone would have taken our campsite, since we passed a lot of people camped at the river sites, but to get to ours you have to go all the way to the end of the forest service road, and it’s on a stream, not the river, which some people might think is less desirable. we prefer it, because it’s over a mile from any other human being. so quiet and peaceful.

well, apparently we are not the only beings who feel this way. we discovered shortly after we arrived on saturday afternoon that a fledgling spotted owl was watching us from its perch in a tree 50 feet from the campsite. as if that wasn’t amazing enough, it proceeded to fly to closer and closer branches as the afternoon progressed. we took pictures of quinn and the owl together, because eventually it was perched on the edge of the campsite. i sketched it for a while, we talked to it a bunch, it went between a few branches and observed us for a while, then settled on one and tried to nap, but it was too curious to keep its eyes closed. we got to see it stretch out a wing, preen its downy feathers, blink its eyes, and i even saw it yawn.

at dusk it went from branch to branch, starting to listen for critters to hunt. by the time it was dark i had lost track of where it was, but a few hours later, it came back to perch on the edge of our campsite again, and was joined by its nestmate a few minutes later. they were uncannily different in their facial features considering they were siblings. it was incredible to see the two of them perched one above the other, watching us sit around our cookfire. they stayed for a while, but left before we had jiffypop for dessert.

the next day i hiked with quinn up an elk trail to the top of the nearest ridge. i also got to eat thimbleberries, which i haven’t had since i lived in washington 6 years ago. quinn loves the tent- it is a nice den for naps, and also a handy playpen where the dirt/twigs/rocks are not available to go in his mouth if we need to be doing something else besides removing leaf litter from his hands.

quinn’s latest new trick is pivoting on his belly to go after toys that are behind him.

8/1-8/8

quinn’s lower left front tooth is making its way into the world, and is about halfway there. his lower right front tooth is now cutting through too, and seems likely to come in just as quickly.

quinn now rolls over very competently, and i have seen him purposely roll with the intention of getting something- his binky was on the bed next to the wall, and he rolled over to get to it, and stuck it in his mouth. he also rolls while i change his diaper sometimes, and makes it interesting getting him changed or dressed.

we went to mom and baby yoga and quinn was extremely active. the 5 month old baby next to us was content to lie on his back and play or nap, but quinn wanted to be doing what maya, the 10 month old across from us, was doing. he and maya had a great time facing each other on their bellies, wiggling and pushing up and talking. maya is much more fine tuned in some of her movements, while quinn is more of the approach of “i’m going for it! let’s see hwat happens when i fling this limb over that way!” he is determined to move, that much is clear. he wiggles and lunges and lurches enough now that he does actually go places on his belly- whatever that is called. scooching? creeping? belly crawling? he is amazing to watch in action and it is exciting to see him developing all of these new moves.

8/9-8/15

this week was eventful- we spent most of it on a sheep farm on the outskirts of eugene, oregon, putting on the northwest world reggae festival. dada is one of the organizers, and he was both in charge of the 60 vendors, and assistant sound engineer, not to mention his general usefulness because of his tools and handyman skills. i was mostly a mommy this year but helped out where i could. last year we had 110 degree weather and no shade- this year a beautiful 80 degrees and lots of wonderful trees to camp and enjoy music under. it was cool to think back to a year ago when quinn was just a bean and i was craving chicken soup in the hot weather!

quinn loves camping, so we knew he would enjoy that aspect of the festival, but we didn’t know how he’d do with so many people. it was a little worrisome when on wednesday and thursday as a slow trickle of crew and volunteer people started showing up, quinn kept getting upset whenever anyone talked to him or near him. he adjusted amazingly well and by the time 1800 guests arrived on the scene, he was all smiles.

he loved our campsite- taking naps in the tent and playing on the blankets on the ground. he goes straight to the perimeter of the blankets now, grabs fists full of dirt, moss and pine needles, and sticks them in his mouth. usually he doesn’t leave them in his mouth, occasionally he does but spits them out, and rarely do we have to help him get something out of his mouth. i don’t think he swallows any of it. the only thing i’ve seen him swallow besides milk is water, and that was just this week. he was bodhi drinking out of a cap of  a water bottle and he wanted to try it out. he seemed surprised when he swallowed it.

the last few days of the festival quinn started using the “B” sound a lot- buh, bah, boo. i know he’s not trying to say “bottle” so maybe “booby” will be his first word. ha! while i’m on my radical kick- i beastfed bodhi! i had permission to use the boob if woke up on my “tent watch” while the rest of the parents were boogying down at the festival, and well, it worked like a charm! i’m sure i will get comments on this one (“gasp!”)

…back at home, quinn tried a few fingerfuls of avocado on tuesday and banana on wednesday- so far so good!

8/16-8/22

quinn tried applesauce on thursday (i made it myself- just organic apple, no sugar) and he turned his head away, so maybe we’ll try it again another day. he ended up eating some more avocado; he makes a face that looks like dislike, when he eats anything, but he goes after more so he clearly wants it! sometimes he will grab my hand or the finger the avocado is on, and inspect it visually, and then pull it into his own mouth. then he’ll sometimes suck on the finger as if it is an avocado nipple and sucking it might make more avocado come out. 🙂 on friday he had banana again, but he got kind of hyper afterwards, so we have to mix banana with other food i think.

on saturday, michele (dada’s sister) came up from california to visit. noah didn’t come meet his cousin yet- he is 20 months old, and traveling is not his strong point at the moment. but michele was great- quinn liked her a lot, and dad and i got to take a walk while she watched him. that night quinn had his first rice cereal (organic! with iron!) for dinner. sunday was a mellow day. michele and i were both knitting while dada carved a baby spoon for quinn and quinn took a big nap. then we all went to mt tabor for a walk. he tried out his new spoon that night on some avocado.

on monday, dada went to work but michele and quinn and i went to a yarn store for fun. before michele left that evening, she took pictures for us of quinn’s newest food adventure- peas! on tuesday and wednesday quinn and i went to work. by wednesday night he was so tired that when i took him out of the sling he was ready to go right back to sleep in the bed for a whole hour without even nursing.

8/23 6 MONTHS!!!

quinn and i were going to work today but we decided to stay home instead, both because it is his half birthday, and because he had a rough day yesterday at the lab (a hard time napping, kind of fussy all day so we left early). so we relaxed today and reflected on the last 6 months. my big boy is 22 pounds and 29 inches long.

quinn and daddy are bonding a lot recently. quinn is reaching out for dada to hold him more and more, and loves to play with him, listen to him play guitar, and bite his nose.

now that his 2 bottom teeth are in, we have started brushing his teeth- so far he likes it!

he ate a lot of avocado for his half birthday dinner. 🙂

quinn’s fifth month ~ whisper, screech, hiccup, laugh!

6/24-6/30

quinn is such an amazing little person. he is so much fun to have conversations with. he is experimenting lately with his whole range of volume, testing out screeches and squeals on one end of the spectrum, and practicing whispering at the other end. at least i think he’s whispering- mostly it sounds like air passing through spit bubbles, but whenever he does it and i whisper back to him, he smiles as if to say, “yeah, you got it, mom!”

with his hands, quinnn is now a master of grabbing and has taken to actually feeling things- he likes to feel our faces, clothes, etc. he checks out the texture of things with a motion of his hands that looks like scratching. it is so cool to see him exploring his senses.

he is now aware that toys, when they fall, do not simply disappear into the abyss, and he therefore will reach and stretch more and more to try to go after them. when he arches his back doing this, i can see that the next step of rolling over onto his tummy is not far off.

as far as eating and sleeping habits go, i think quinn is in a period of transition. some of his naps are lengthening and the frequency is somewhat decreasing on some days. he’s experimenting with falling asleep without a walk, either as i feed him or hold him on my lap while he uses his binky. coinciding with the nap transition is a bit of experimenting with feedings; also lower in frequency, though he is making up for it by eating twice as much per feeding. he still seems set on growing so fast!

7/1-7/7

quinn is in a growth spurt… i’ve heard 4 months is a big time for that, but then i’ve heard it about 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 2 months, 3 months… ha! and really, what part of quinn’s life so far has been anything OTHER than a growth spurt? 🙂

quinn is officially rolling over now. he goes from tummy to back, often on accident. now he also goes from back to tummy, at least once a day it seems. usually it is while he is in the baby caveman TM or on a quilt on the floor, reaching for a toy he dropped.

we spent the day with steve, dena and bodhi on the 4th of july, and had a cookout, went to the park to play horseshoes, and watched fireworks from their backyard. bodhi and quinn missed the fireworks. quinn was very adaptable to having his whole routine moved to someone else’s house for the day. he took his naps on their guest bed and enjoyed watching people’s food go into their mouths, and reaching out to grab their faces.

7/8-7/14

we spent sunday out in the gorge, with S&D&B again. steve and dada hiked/waded up oneonta gorge and dena, bodhi, quinn and i played by the stream lower down. bodhi put rocks in quinn’s yogurt cup while quinn squirmed on the blanket. the two boys are actually the same size- we stood them up side by side. (bodhi=13 months!)

this week was very hot- quinn likes playing with a cold wet washcloth in the evening (hottest part of the day). he is discovering new things like 1) his feet and 2) how much fun it is to grab papers.

he is also going through a time of trying to fight sleep for some of his daytime naps- crying for a minute, then saying “uhhh…uhhh…uhhh…” to put himself to sleep. he tubs his eyes with his fists now when he is tired (he used to just rub his face on my shirt). he is sucking different combinations of fingers, but hasn’t settled on a favorite yet. (he is not using his binky so much anymore.) sleep at night, however, has been very easy, in fact he has put himself to bed early (before 8 ) several times this week and slept till morning (7:30-8:00) with just a large bedtime feeding and one or two feedings during the night.

7/15-7/21

we spent sunday at the oregon country fair. it was a warm day, and we were exhausted from the car ride and carrying baby gear and food and quinn all day, but it was a great fair. there were people on stilts, parades, live music everywhere you turned, lots of food to smell and cool stuff to look at.

one of my favorite moments with quinn so far happened on monday night. i had the hiccups and i was going to lay down and nurse quinn to sleep for the night but as soon as he latched on i hiccuped. he unlatched, looked up at me and laughed more than i have ever heard him laugh before. he got me laughing, too, and since i  still had the hiccups it happened a few more times before we settled down. i wasn’t sure if it was just plain funny or if he was identifying with me- hey, i get those all the time! either way, i’ll never forget laughing together.

on tuesday val came by in the morning and she held quinn while i did some computer work for her for the festival. quinn likes val a lot, and he is in a very smiley stage. dena and bodhi came over in the afternoon for a walk, and we went to quiznos so dena could have lunch. bodhi pushed stools around the restaurant- we had the whole place to ourselves.

the only other event was on saturday, when we went to dada’s hammer and hand company picnic. quinn was of course very popular there. dada’s boss sam and his wife emily held quinn, and it turns out not only was their son born at home, but emily went to the Farm to witness her nephew’s birth and met both pamela and ina may 13 years ago. (for those of you who don’t know, i am an ina may gaskin fanatic- she is “the nation’s leading midwife” and writes about natural childbirth and breastfeeding and i’ve read all 3 of her books.) quinn did well at the picnic (he is always so adaptable) and took a nap or two in the sling. he didn’t want to eat much, probably because he was distracted, but was content sucking his thumb for the last hour before we went home. elsewhere in the world that day, everyone i know was receiving their pre-ordered copies of harry potter and the deathly hallows. money is tight, but hopefully a copy will be loaned to me soon!

7/22-7/23 5 MONTHS!

quinn chose his 5 month birthday to roll over over over! he was playing on his back in the caveman, flipped to his belly, then after a brief pause went on again to his back (he has been reluctant to do this direction lately, i think because he bumped his head once, but he has so much more control now) then quickly went to his tummy again. he ended up right on the hearth of the fireplace, in reach of the first few inches of ash left over from last winter’s fires. time to start seriously thinking about babyproofing!

quinn is so much fun at this age (what age hasn’t been fun though?) he is full of smiles. when i come around the jeep to retrieve him from the backseat after a trip to the store, i am usually in lala land and since the windows are tinted, quinn sees me before i see him. when i open the door, quinn has a big grin on his face- it is so nice to have someone in my life who is always SO HAPPY to see me!

other new things… quinn is interested in paper (grabbing it feels cool and makes an interesting sound) and plastic grocery bags, although he never gets to play with those. another new trick he has learned is how to rest when he is on his belly. for a long time he would kick and “swim” on his belly and get more and more tired until he couldn’t take it anymore, then squeal for me to come help him back to his back for a rest.

quinn was a champ on sunday when we went berry picking on sauvie island. oregon has amazing berries. we got about 15 pounds of boysenberries and marionberries and then i made jam on quinn’s birthday. he’ll be able to eat some of it next spring!
